Seventeen and Counting: Kossuth Sweeps Belmont as Central Breaks Skid

Kossuth’s volleyball winning streak reached 17 matches Tuesday, Sept. 29, with a 3-0 victory at Belmont that kept the Aggies unbeaten in Class 3A, Region 1.

The 25-10, 25-23, 25-20 sweep lifted Kossuth to 25-4 overall and 7-0 in region play. Belmont, which pushed the second set within two points, fell to 12-18. Kossuth has not lost since Aug. 20; its schedule now turns to a home match against Booneville on Thursday, Oct. 1.

While Kossuth extended its run, Alcorn Central ended a five-match losing streak by sweeping Mantachie at home. Central allowed just 32 points across the three sets, winning 25-12, 25-13, 25-7 to improve to 10-18 and 3-5 in the same region. The Bears also completed a season sweep of Mantachie, following a 3-1 road victory Sept. 8. Mantachie dropped to 3-17.

Biggersville came closest in the middle set at Wheeler, but the Eagles took that one 26-24 and finished a 3-0 win with 25-14 and 25-15 victories on either side. A day after sweeping Thrasher, the Lions slipped to 4-23 overall and 4-5 in Class 1A, Region 1. Wheeler improved to 16-7.

Thursday sends Central to Lake Cormorant and Biggersville to Falkner, both listed for 6 p.m. Central Time. Corinth’s golfers have the MSU Invitational that day, followed by the Gatorade Cross Country Classic on Saturday, Oct. 3, on the school calendar; starting times are not listed.

Football returns Friday, Oct. 2, with all four games scheduled for 7 p.m. Central: Corinth hosts South Pontotoc, Kossuth hosts Booneville, Biggersville hosts Baldwyn and Central travels to Belmont.
