Lopez Wins Topper Trails 5K by Two Seconds; Kossuth Volleyball Streak Hits 16

Silvestre Lopez won the Topper Trails boys’ 5K by two seconds Thursday, September 24, finishing in 16:45 at Blue Mountain Christian University. The Corinth junior finished ahead of Olive Branch’s Preston Mundy (16:47) and led the Warriors to fourth among 23 scoring teams with 164 points in the official meet results. Lopez had placed second at Saltillo five days earlier.

Corinth’s other scorers were Jose Arguello (26th, 19:13), Declan Murphree (38th, 19:51), Roberto Pruneda (46th, 20:10) and Witt Dalton (56th, 20:28). Kossuth placed 21st, paced by Ty Simmons in 33rd (19:41). Biggersville’s Wyatt Brooks finished 135th (23:59).

Abbigail McGee gave Kossuth a top-10 finish in the girls’ 5K, placing 10th in 22:55. Zoey Mullins was 18th (24:43) as the Aggies took fifth with 123 points. Corinth placed eighth with 205, led by Maya Gomez in 23rd (24:57). Biggersville’s Ella Tucker finished 41st (27:32).

Kossuth added a volleyball win that night, sweeping Mantachie on the road 25–19, 25–11, 25–12. The Aggies’ 16th consecutive victory lifted them to 24–4 overall and 6–0 in Class 3A Region 1. They next visit Belmont on Tuesday, September 29, at 6:30 p.m.

Belmont beat Alcorn Central in four sets Thursday. Central took the opener 25–23, then lost 19–25, 9–25, 21–25, dropping to 9–18 and 2–5 in district play. Pine Grove swept Biggersville 3–0 in Corinth, leaving the Lions 3–22; set scores were not posted.

Corinth’s last listed match was Tuesday’s 3–0 win over North Pontotoc. Its school calendar next lists the Saturday, September 26, Hickory Flat tournament, without opponents or a start time.

Friday, September 25, sends Alcorn Central (2–2) to Biggersville (1–3) for a 7 p.m. football kickoff. Kossuth (2–2) visits North Pontotoc (2–2) at 7. Corinth (2–2) has a bye; its next game is at home against South Pontotoc on October 2.
