Central Wins Booneville Rematch in 16–14 Finish; Lopez Leads Corinth at Tupelo
Alcorn Central had already lost twice to Booneville in three days. With the deciding set pushed beyond 15 points Saturday, the Lady Bears finally found a different finish.
Central rallied from a set down to beat the Blue Devils 20–25, 25–20, 16–14 on September 12, earning its lone victory in five tournament matches. The win came after Booneville took their earlier Saturday meeting 25–20, 25–7, following Thursday’s five-set conference victory over Central.
The rematch offered the Lady Bears a measure of recovery during a demanding day. Lake Cormorant beat Central 25–22, 25–17, with Sydney Potts recording six kills for the winners. Tupelo won 25–10, 25–19, and Olive Branch handed Central a 25–13, 25–18 defeat. Central finished the day 1–4 and stood at 9–14.
At Tupelo High School, Corinth’s runners measured their Saturday in kilometers. Silvestre Lopez covered the boys’ 5K in 17:24.4 to finish 14th in the Tupelo Invitational’s 5A–7A varsity race, the Warriors’ best individual placing in the posted varsity results.
Sebastin del Villar followed in 38th at 18:20.4. Jose Arguello was 61st in 19:15.0, Eli Cooper 70th in 19:34.7 and Cayden Silva 82nd in 20:03.3, completing Corinth’s first five finishers. Declan Murphree was close behind Silva in 85th at 20:08.7. Completed boys’ results.
Corinth also recognized Roberto Pruneda as its high school boys’ Runner of the Week.
Maya Gomez led Corinth’s girls in the race labeled 1A–4A varsity, placing 26th in 26:18.1. Nancy Garcia finished three places and 8.8 seconds behind her, taking 29th in 26:26.9. Emma Ganus was 31st at 27:04.3, followed by Kayleigh McEwen in 45th at 29:46.9 and Cora Murphree in 53rd at 31:31.4. Maylynn Estrada finished 56th in 32:18.9, and Aylin Herndez was 66th in 34:29.4. Completed girls’ results.
Reporting note: Corinth’s scheduled volleyball match against Booneville had no reported final. Cross-country team standings and Central’s individual volleyball statistics were not verified. No additional September 12 varsity results were verified for Kossuth or Biggersville; that does not establish that their teams were idle.
