Kossuth’s 21-Match Run Meets Belmont With a State Berth at Stake

Kossuth has swept Belmont twice this season. A third victory Monday, October 12, would send the Aggies to the Class 3A volleyball championship match.

The 29-4 Aggies bring 21 consecutive victories into the state semifinal against 16-18 Belmont. Their September 10 and September 29 meetings both ended 3-0. Kossuth’s school calendar lists “VB North Half” at 6 p.m.; the winner advances to the October 16 final.

Football returns Friday, October 16, with all four county teams scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs. Alcorn Central hosts Mooreville carrying a 5-2 record and four straight wins, including Friday’s 39-14 victory over Mantachie. Corinth, 4-2 after beating North Pontotoc 52-7 on October 8, welcomes Tishomingo County for homecoming. Both Central and Corinth are 2-0 in district play.

Biggersville stays home against Tupelo Christian Prep after its 16-6 win over Walnut ended a five-game losing streak and lifted the Lions to 2-5. Kossuth, 3-3, travels to Belmont. The fixtures appear on the teams’ Central, Corinth, Biggersville and Kossuth schedules.

Before those kickoffs, Central and Kossuth’s boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams head to Savannah, Tennessee, for Tuesday’s October 13 Horse Creek Invitational. The host’s updated timetable puts varsity boys at 4:30 p.m. and girls at approximately 5 p.m. at Horsecreek Wildlife and Animal Sanctuary.

The next listed varsity meet for Corinth and Biggersville is October 22 at the regional championships in New Albany’s BNA Park/Tallahatchie Trails complex. Corinth’s Class 4A girls race at 10 a.m., followed by the boys at 10:30. Biggersville’s Class 1A girls start at 11 a.m. and boys at 11:30.

Golf opens the week at Hillandale: Central’s calendar places boys’ regionals Monday, October 12, and girls’ regionals Tuesday, October 13. Corinth’s girls also have regionals Tuesday. Its boys’ next calendar entry is the October 26-27 state tournament, contingent on qualification after the October 6 regional.

Central, Corinth and Biggersville have no further varsity volleyball match listed after their playoff losses to Kossuth, Mooreville and Ingomar, respectively.
