All four Alcorn County teams pick up wins this week

Biggersville- Biggersville’s offense finally warmed up after a scoreless opening quarter, and the Lions rode a huge night from senior quarterback Xae Mayes to pull away from visiting Walnut, 34-21, in a non-conference showdown. The Lions answered a second-quarter deficit with three straight touchdowns and never surrendered the lead again.

Slow start, then fireworks

Neither team scored in the first quarter. Walnut drove inside the Biggersville 20 late in the period, but the Lions recovered a fumble at their own 11-yard line to keep it 0-0. On Walnut’s next series, Biggersville defensive back Zialis Blackmon intercepted a pass near his own 18 and returned possession to the Lions.

Those takeaways set up Biggersville’s offense. Early in the second quarter, Mayes dropped back and found Brooks Seago down the sideline for a 32-yard touchdown. Kicker Eli Nguyen converted the extra point to make it 7-0.

Walnut responded on the next drive. Running back Konner Morgan powered in from 4 yards out, and coach Mykel Jones rolled the dice. Linebacker and short-yardage back Braydin Spight took the direct snap and plowed into the end zone for a two-point conversion to give Walnut an 8-7 lead.

Biggersville showed its resilience right before halftime. Mayes kept the ball on a 3-yard quarterback draw, then ran in the two-point conversion himself to put the Lions ahead 15-8 at the break.

Lions strike deep in third quarter

Biggersville took control coming out of halftime. Early in the third quarter, Mayes hit Demri Gunn on a 40-yard bomb down the seam for a score. Although the Lions missed the extra point, they stretched their advantage to 21-8.

Walnut refused to go away. Morgan sprinted around the right edge for a 16-yard touchdown run, and Spight’s PAT cut the deficit to 21-15.

Just over two minutes later, Mayes answered again. On third-and-long he rolled left and lofted a pass to Zialis Blackmon, who broke a tackle and raced 52 yards to the end zone. Nguyen’s extra point pushed the margin to 28-15.

Walnut rallies, but Mayes slams the door

Walnut threatened early in the fourth quarter when QB Westin Mills plunged in from five yards out. The Wildcats attempted another two-point try but were stuffed at the line, leaving the score 28-21.

Biggersville’s defense responded with a crucial stop, forcing a turnover on downs near midfield. That set up the play of the game – Mayes took a keeper on a read-option, burst through a hole, and raced 63 yards to the end zone. Though the PAT was wide, the touchdown gave the Lions a two-score cushion at 34-21.

The Wildcats had two more possessions, but Biggersville held them on downs each time. The Lions ran out the clock to secure the victory.

Kossuth Defense Delivers Again

For the second straight week, Kossuth’s defense proved to be the difference-maker. The Aggies went on the road and earned a gritty 21–14 win over Adamsville on Thursday night, holding the Cardinals to under 200 yards of total offense.

Quarterback Dawson Weatherbee opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to Eli Null, followed by an extra point from Anderson Morales. Adamsville tied it briefly in the second quarter before Weatherbee’s short rushing score gave Kossuth a 14–7 halftime lead. Running back Eli Tays added a crucial three-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to extend the lead, and the Aggies’ defense sealed the victory by recovering the late onside kick attempt.

Corinth Crushes North Pontotoc

Corinth flexed its muscle in a dominant 52–6 victory over previously unbeaten North Pontotoc, seizing control of the Region 1-4A race. The Warriors piled up over 430 rushing yards, led by Pat Crump’s 128-yard, two-touchdown performance.

Corinth led 24–0 at halftime, thanks to touchdowns from Qwuantiver Young, Preston Crump, and C.J. Roby, along with a Griffin Carmichiel field goal. After the Vikings finally found the end zone early in the third, Crump immediately answered with a 55-yard score to squash any comeback hopes. Jamir Barton and Roby added long touchdown runs in the fourth quarter as Corinth’s defense held North Pontotoc to just 50 rushing yards and sacked the quarterback five times.

Alcorn Central Ends Drought with Division Win

Alcorn Central broke a seven-year drought Friday night, claiming its first division victory since 2018 with a hard-fought 20–14 win at Mantachie. Ty Whitten opened the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown run, and the Bears’ defense took over from there. Ashton Peters recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score in the second quarter, giving Central a 12–0 halftime lead.

After Mantachie cut the lead to six in the third quarter, Braylen Parrish’s 95-yard scoop-and-score proved to be the game-winner. Mantachie added a late touchdown and two-point conversion, but Central’s defense held firm to secure the milestone win.
